Did you know?

In 2014, AIS Manuplas supported the Making Waves Project, a project that celebrated Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, as being a city of skills, creativity, and innovation. The project created a visitor’s trail comprised of 16 sculptured fish installations: designed by local apprentices, sponsored by local businesses, and decorated by local artists. AIS Manuplas manufactured all 16 fish, and the local artists used our Plymouth site to decorate them.

One of the largest floating dockside fenders manufactured by AIS Manuplas measured 4 metres in diameter, 8 metres in length and weighed over 7 tonnes. If the foam core of this fender was unrolled, it would stretch over 2.5 miles!

AIS

AIS engineers, manufactures, and installs a range of products for use in some of the world’s harshest environments.

Our products protect against fire, noise, explosions, and more for the energy, industrial, automotive, chemical and marine sectors.

These products can be found in various locations around the world, from remote oil rigs to your local leisure centre.

The Marine division of AIS is based in Plymouth and has a facility measuring over 100,000 square feet. This facility is home to our design team and is where we manufacture a range of protective systems for ships, docks, and ports.

Plymouth is also home to our leisure section that designs, manufactures, and installs a range of water play equipment (including slides and interactive walls) for UK leisure centres and beyond.

Example Products made by AIS

This product provides a buffer – but where and how?

This is a Mooring Buoy. A low maintenance product than can absorb high impact. Mooring buoys are used to facilitate the mooring of a vessel.

Their position is often secured by a chain or rope, fixed (or weighed down) to the seabed.

Fascinating Fact:

The buoy’s core is made from layers of lightweight foam, which provide sufficient buoyancy (an upwards force) to keep the buoy afloat on the water’s surface.

If the foam was unravelled and laid flat, it’s length would approximately be that of a double decker bus.

Designed to be Underwater!

Another product designed and manufactured by AIS is the Modsyn.

This is designed for use below the water’s surface, to facilitate a wide range of under water applications (e.g. umbilical/cable support, installation aid, general subsea buoyancy)

They can be used at depths of up to 6000m, designed with an internal composite foam (i.e. syntactic foam).

They also contain Macrospheres (one pictured on top of the Modsyn here).

These are spherical thermoplastic mouldings which are a key element to the Modsyn’s ability to fulfil its function.
