Chewing Gum and Beyond

The Wrigley UK Heritage

Wrigley Spearmint Gum arrived from America on UK shores in 1911. By 1925, its sales proved so successful, the family-run company decided to open a factory in the UK, which finished being built two years later in North London.

After 40 years, it was time to move again – this time Plymouth would be the location for the new factory and Wrigley’s UK Head Office.

Plymouth was chosen for its superior air quality – being situated between the sea and Dartmoor. Also the excellent mechanical engineering talent which had been developed through the city’s long history in commercial shipping and dockyards was also very attractive to the company.

A Breath of Fresh Air

If you are in the Estover area of Plymouth, you may sometimes catch more than a hint of mint in the air. This is because Mars Wrigley is busy producing over 3 million packs of chewing gum per day from its Plymouth factory.

Clean air is actually very important to the company – if you are interested to read how the company is helping to beat air pollution, take a look at this news article on their website:   How Mars works to beat air pollution

Working with Nature on the Doorstep

The Plymouth factory is situated on a huge stunning 45 acre site which shares a border with Dartmoor and is home to a herd of deer! Of these 45 acres, 25 acres are dedicated to natural habitat and increasing the biodiversity of the area.

The photos here were taken by the Mars Wrigley Plymouth’s Training & Development Manager as part of the Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group competition to capture views from the local factories. The sunrise was the winning photo!
