Did you know?

A microLED is a microscopic LED. An LED stands for a Light-Emitting Diode which is a type of solid-state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light.

Today's LED bulbs can be 6 to 7 times more energy efficient than conventional incandescent lights and cut energy use by more than 80 percent.

Good quality LED's can have a useful lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. This means an LED switched on for seven hours a day, 365 days a year, can last for nearly 20 years before you need to replace it.

Plessey

Plessey is a component manufacturer of microLED displays technology.

The company does not make its own products, instead, Plessey makes microLED displays for other companies – world leaders in consumer technology. Plessey’s microLED displays are integrated amongst many other key components to enable content to be viewed in consumer products such as televisions, smart watches, mobile phones and augmented reality and mixed reality headsets.

Existing display technologies that you might see in the market today include LCD and OLED. However MicroLEDs are the first brand new display technology to be commercialised in more than a decade which means that Plessey is at the forefront of some of the most cutting-edge technology in the world.

Example Engineering Roles at Plessey: Equipment Engineers, Process Engineers, Electronic Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineers, IT Engineers, Software Engineers.

Apprenticeship Opportunities: Usually 2-3 higher apprenticeships available each year. The company looks for good GCSE’s in Maths and Science plus a qualification above GCSE to convey that the HNC/Foundation degree Maths element will be achievable.

Graduate Opportunities: Usually 4 or 5 a year available in various areas. An Electronics / Physics Degree is required.

MicroLEDs, the Future and your Future!

Plessey's MicroLED displays

Plessey can produce MicroLED display screens which measure just 0.7 inches but consist of 2 million microLED pixels. This means these pixels are extremely small!

If you imagine that a red blood cell is 7.5 microns in diameter, Plessey can produce microLED pixels that are only 3 microns – that’s less than half the size of a red blood cell!

These MicroLEDs can create displays that deliver high contrast, high speed, high brightness and wider viewing angles whilst actually taking up very little physical space and therefore can use less power than other types of display screens. As an example, it is this type of technology that is allowing the exciting developments of head-mounted displays that can be used for Virtual  / Augmented Reality technology.

You can watch a video showcasing some of the Plessey technology and production processes here.

Fantastic News from Plessey!

The team at Plessey have decided to work with Facebook to help achieve their vision of the next computing platform centred around people. Under a new commercial agreement, Plessey’s LED manufacturing operations will be dedicated to helping Facebook prototype and develop new technologies for potential use in the Augmented Reality (AR) /Virtual Reality (VR) space.

With consumer devices like Oculus Quest and a continued legacy of breakthrough research, Facebook is in an exciting position to make consumer-ready AR glasses a reality. Plessey shares that vision for a future where technology and the barriers between people disappear.

Dr Keith Strickland (Co-CEO/CTO) said “We are delighted to announce this new commercial agreement with Facebook. Plessey has been at the forefront of micro LED display development and this agreement recognises the significant advances in our capabilities that we have made in recent years and we very much look forward to working with Facebook to help bring their vision to life.”
