Advanced Medical Solutions

Advanced Medical Solutions (Admedsol) makes products that support medical professionals with wound care, and surgical and wound closure. They manufacture products and materials out of two sites in the U.K., one in the Netherlands, two in Germany and one in the Czech Republic.

At the Plymouth site, the team produces medical grade adhesive (glue). The glue is put into special plastic devices so that doctors and nurses can use it to glue cuts together instead of using stitches.  This is easier for the doctors and less painful for the patient. The company sells to the NHS, European health agencies and Asia.  The biggest market by far is the USA who love gluing people back together!

Admedsol employs people who are:  Chemists, Project Scientists, Engineers and Microbiologists.  The Plymouth site also employs Technical Apprentices.

What They Manufacture

LiquiBand®

LiquiBand® is a range of Admedsol products manufactured at its Plymouth site.

LiquiBand® contains “cyanoacrylate” technology. Cyanoacrylates are adhesives which are strong and fast-setting. Depending on their formulation, they will have different qualities of strength, setting time and flexibility so that they can be used for different procedures.

For example certain types of formulations do not require removal as they will naturally slough off the skin as part of the natural wound healing process.

They can also be water resistant so sometimes an additional dressing is not needed.

How the "super-glue" is used.

The superglue-type product made by Admedsol can be used in many ways, for example to stick skin together after an accident, after an operation or sometimes to glue plasters in place.  It can also be used to glue things inside the body –  this is faster and less painful for the patient.

This long ‘gun-like’ device is used inside the body to fix things in place.

The LiquiBand® family of skin adhesive products are provided in a range of different applicators so that they can be used in different ways.

This small ‘highlighter’ type device is used to ‘paint’ glue over a cut to hold it together –  the  “wings” you see help the user to activate the device and use the exact amount they need. This applicator has a foam dome at its tip to be able to apply the glue over a wider area.
