Babcock's Projects

Keeping the Royal Navy’s Fleet Shipshape

As owners and operators of major dockyard facilities at Devonport in Plymouth and Rosyth in Scotland, Babcock ensures that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely. Babcock engineers carry out a range of support and deep maintenance work on both nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships ranging from aircraft carriers to mine hunters.

Using Marine Technology Solutions for Ship Upkeep

Babcock carried out a Power Generation and Machinery Controls Update (PGMU) for HMS Richmond – the first Type 23 frigate to receive such an update. The PGMU replaced the main generators and conversion equipment and was accompanied by a fully-modernised control and surveillance system, making it easier to control and monitor the engines.

The design team at Babcock built a Virtual Reality (VR) model to  support the design and production process. The compartments were laser scanned from 10 different positions to create a detailed digital image. Designers then removed redundant systems from the model, and overlaid the new systems in software.

The total upkeep project which included the PGMU, involved a team of over 350 Babcock employees working 1 million hours in total. The work included 600 metres of new pipework and over 8 km of new cable.

Extending Marine Vessels Operational Life

One of Babcock recent projects was to carry out an upgrade to HMS Portland to extend its operational life. After a survey of the vessel’s propulsion motors highlighted a material defect  – the motors were removed for complete and successful overhaul.

Watch the time-lapse footage of the vessel as she floods up and exits Devonport’s Frigate Support Centre in the final stages of the refit programme here.

Science Video Pack

Babcock has made some interesting videos to help you understand more about the science behind their work.

Find out how ships float, how submarines make water, why ships don’t fall over – all presented to you by Babcock employees.
